Mixing in Logic Pro X

Apple’s Logic Pro X – one of the leading DAWs is one of the most stable mixing environments that is used by different artists and audio engineers – from rock and jazz recording studios to underground EDM producers.

How to mix in Logic?

It is very important to organize each project you’re working on in the same way, so you can jump between them and know where the things are –especially when you start to work in a community of mixers. Having a system saves time and energy for everyone involved in the mix.

Import Stems

Some people prefer to make all the drums one color, all the basses one color, all the chords one color etc. But that doesn’t really help you because you’re still looking through things.

Color code tracks

Some people prefer to make all the drums one color, all the basses one color, all the chords one color etc. But that doesn’t really help you because you’re still looking through things.

The best approach is to have each track marked with its own unique color. And after working with the session for awhile you start to remember colors of your tracks. Ex. Kick is blue, Snare is green, HiHat is purple and so on. And that way you can work really fast.

If you want to be fancy, use color families for groups like drums, chords etc
but use a unique shade for each

Mix Organization

The best approach and most universal practice to organizing the track order is to start with the drums. First channel is a kick (or several channels – if you have multiple kicks layered).

Drums on top:

  • kick
  • snare
  • clap
  • hi hats
  • toms/low percussion (congas)
  • cymbals
  • percussion

After drums comes the bass or basses:

  • bass
  • sub bass

After the bass(es)

  • pads/chords
  • leads/melodies
  • vocals
  • fx

MixBus Setup

Before processing individual channels we recommend setting up MixBus first and mix into Tape Machine and Bus Compressor. Learn in details about MixBus setup and Mixing workflow with Mixing Foundations online course.
